Eligible veterans who served on the Korean Peninsula, flew over it or served in the waters adjacent to it at any time between June 25, 1950, and July 27, 1953, still may apply for the Korean War Service Medal.

The Air Force, as the lead military agency, is accepting and approving applications and issuing the awards to veterans of all services. Applications, which must include a copy of DD Form 214 (discharge papers), may be sent to:

HQ AFPC/DPPPRK
550 C Street W, Suite 12
Randolph AFB, TX 78150-4714.

The Web page at www.afpc.randolph.af.mil/awards explains eligibility rules, procedures for downloading application forms and sample letters. Veterans without Internet access can get eligibility and application information by contacting the Air Force Awards Section at (800) 558-1404, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Central Time.

As of early March, the Air Force had approved 45,318 medals and mailed 42,384. Approved applications received on or before Oct. 2, 2000, are being entered in the computer database. This is the final processing step before mailing. More than 40,000 additional applications received between Oct 2 and March 5 are pending review and evaluation.

“It will take about 150 days from the date an application is received until the approved medal is mailed,” Air Force officials said. “Because of the volume of applications, we are not able to confirm receipt or provide the status of an individual application.”
